Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, representing Texas' 30th district, has taken to social media to express her concerns regarding food access and funding. On March 10, 2025, she addressed the issue of underfunding for SNAP benefits and announced her efforts to expand these benefits through legislative action.
In a tweet posted on March 10, 2025, Congresswoman Crockett criticized the GOP's approach to SNAP funding in what she described as "Trump's economy." She stated her intention to reintroduce the Supporting All Healthy Options When Purchasing Produce (SHOPP) Act. The act aims to expand SNAP benefits to include frozen produce and legumes. "While the GOP continues to underfund SNAP and food access to families in Trump's economy, I am working to expand the flexibility of SNAP benefits to include frozen produce and legumes by reintroducing the Supporting All Healthy Options When Purchasing Produce (or 'SHOPP') Act.…"
Later that day, Crockett highlighted budgetary issues concerning food assistance programs. In another tweet dated March 10, 2025, she pointed out that the GOP’s FY2025 budget cuts $20 million from the Emergency Food Assistance Program. This reduction impacts resources available for soup kitchens, food pantries, and other food organizations. "Speaking of food access at risk, the GOP’s FY2025 budget underfunds the Emergency Food Assistance Program by $20 Million—cutting $$ for food to soup kitchens, food pantries, and food organizations!"
Addressing concerns about meal security among Texans, Crockett questioned how House Republicans would respond to those affected by these budget cuts. In a tweet from March 10, 2025, she asked what House Republicans have to say about the impact on millions of Texans who may face uncertainty regarding their next meal. "What does @HouseGOP have to say to the 5.1 Million Texans who are now going to have to worry about whether they will get their next meal?!"
