WASHINGTON – On June 29, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court ruling against affirmative action programs at Harvard and the University of North Carolina.

"With this ruling against race-conscious admissions, the Supreme Court has effectively taken our country back decades and robbed students of color of meaningful opportunities for academic, economic, and societal advancement. The majority opinion in this ruling claims 'colorblindness' and 'fairness' as justification for their decision - but every Black and Brown person in America can tell you that fairness on paper doesn't translate to fairness in real life. Instead, this ruling threatens to return our institutions of higher education to the days when wealth and legacy determined who was admitted and who was passed over. These factors overwhelmingly benefit upper-class non-minority students who can afford private schools with institutional pipelines and are more likely to have legacy ties thanks to historical race discrimination.

"The dissent from Justice Ketanji Brown-Jackson precisely explains why the majority’s decision is wrong: 'Deeming race irrelevant does not make it so in life. And having so detached itself from this country's actual past and present experiences, the Court has now been lured into interfering with the crucial work that UNC and other institutions of higher learning are doing to solve America's real-world problems.'

“In the best case, this ruling is an example of magical thinking completely unmoored from reality; in the worst, it is a calculated attempt to roll back the progress Black and Brown students have made in the halls of academia and the workplace for the past 58 years. Today’s ruling is a tragedy not only for students and places of learning, but for all who have fought for progress in higher education."
