WASHINGTON – On June 9, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30), member of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, issued the following statement after former President Trump announced that a federal grand jury indicted him for mishandling classified documents. The indictment follows an independent investigation by Special Counsel Jack Smith of the former President’s handling of presidential and classified records:
"Like most Americans, I was horrified to learn of President Trump's unlawful hoarding of classified documents in his Florida mansion unearthed by federal law enforcement last year. The risk posed by the chaotic and insecure storage of troves of sensitive information threatens every American, especially in light of Russia's war on Ukraine and aggressive actions by the Chinese government. Today's indictment is an important step towards accountability and justice for Trump's dangerous and reckless endangerment of our national security.
"As a former public defender, I believe strongly that every defendant is innocent until proven guilty, and has a right to quality defense and their day in court. Special Counsel Jack Smith has respected and abided by that principle. My colleagues across the aisle love to talk about a "two-tiered system of justice" in America, and they are not wrong—but this two-tiered system overwhelmingly PROTECTS powerful, rich white men like Trump, and disadvantages poor people of color, like my former clients. Republican politicians aren't angry because this two-tiered system is targeting their favorite president—they are angry because this system is no longer treating President Trump with the impunity to which he is accustomed."
