Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, representing Texas’ 30th district since 2023, has recently expressed concerns over the proposed construction of a deportation camp and the lack of emergency disaster relief funding. Crockett, who succeeded Eddie Bernice Johnson and previously served in the Texas House of Representatives, shared her thoughts on social media regarding these pressing issues.
On November 21, 2024, Congresswoman Crockett posted a tweet expressing her apprehension about the historical implications of detaining individuals without legal protections. She stated, "We've seen what happens when we throw people into camps without basic legal protections. We cannot go down this road again."
In another tweet on the same day, she criticized plans by former President Trump and Governor Abbott to use land for building a deportation camp instead of addressing housing shortages in Texas. Crockett tweeted, "So instead of using this land to build more housing for Texans in the middle of a housing shortage, Trump and Gov Abbott want to build a massive deportation camp to hold people for unspecified lengths of time."
Later that day, Crockett addressed the issue of FEMA's financial constraints amidst recent disasters caused by Helene and Milton. She highlighted her dissatisfaction with political maneuvers during a hearing instead of focusing on solutions. Her post read: "FEMA's on the brink of running out of funds—but instead of coming up with solutions to help pass emergency disaster relief for Americans hurt by Helene and Milton, @OversightGOP spent a hearing spreading conspiracy theories and playing politics. We're sick of it. Fund @fema now."
