Like many shelters across the country, Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is facing high intake numbers for dogs. Currently, the shelter is at 139% capacity for dogs, with large breed dogs making up the majority of the population.

To encourage the public to adopt, Friends of Dallas Animal Services (FODAS) is offering the first 75 adopters who adopt a dog from the shelter a $50 Petco gift card to purchase supplies for their new pet Friday through Sunday.

“We have a robust foster program with more than 1,000 pets in foster homes, and our adoptions have been steady, but that simply hasn’t been enough to keep up with the sheer volume of intake,” said Sarah Sheek, Assistant General Manager. Last weekend alone, DAS received 161 dogs from Friday to Sunday. “We are trying every strategy we can to find positive outcomes, and we’re asking the community to come out this weekend to help us save lives.”

DAS is still firmly committed to their BeDallas90 campaign, the mission to achieve a 90% live release rate. DAS achieved the 90% benchmark for fiscal year 2019 – 2020, and hopes to regain ground in the coming year. In January 2024, the live release rate was 85% for dogs and cats.

Anyone interested in adopting or fostering dogs from Dallas Animal Services should come to 1818 North Westmoreland Road. DAS is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 1 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
