WASHINGTON – Rep. Veasey voted to pass the Bipartisan Budget Agreement that lifts the debt ceiling until January 2025 and sets budget caps for this Congress. The legislation also protects Americans' healthcare and retirements, rejects extreme cuts to vital programs, and fully funds veterans' medical care.

"We took this vote because extreme Republicans decided that they were going to play a dangerous political game and hold hostage vital resources that working families in Texas and across the country depend on. The extreme Republican-led move brought us too close to defaulting on our obligations.

"This bill represents a compromise agreement that eliminates the prospect of default while protecting key services like education, health care, veterans' benefits, and housing. The bipartisan legislation also takes important steps in permitting reform which is critically important to our Texas economy.

"While I object to the way this was handled by the Republicans in the House, I voted for the bill to prevent the worst possible crisis – a devastating default on our debt that would hurt Americans across the country."

The Bipartisan Budget Agreement specifically:

  • Prevents a devastating default on our debt
  • Protects Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid
  • Protects veterans' health care
  • Protects historic infrastructure and climate investments
  • Protects the 40 million borrowers in President Biden's student debt relief plan
