A $15,000 grant from an intergovernmental network working toward racial equality will help a Dallas art project intended to confront structural racism.

The Government Alliance on Race and Equity Summer 2020 Innovation and Implementation Fund recently awarded the $15,000 grant to the Office of Arts and Culture in partnership with the Department of Code Compliance for assistance with the Re:Imagine Vacancy project, according to the city.

The project will involve the transformation of an abandoned lot in southern Dallas into a temporary sculpture garden through the work of local students and artists, according to the city. The grant will help to cover stipends for the artists and students doing the work.

“Arts is a vital way to build and tell the stories of a community,” Liz Cedillo-Pereira, chief of Equity and Inclusion, said. “This project will allow the community to tell their own stories through an artistic narrative.”
