FEBRUARY FILM SERIES AT SPACY

Spacy is collaborating with the Oak Cliff Cultural Center to bring more attention to the work of Bill Gunn's acting and directing career! Funny, brilliant and personal, Kathleen Collins' Losing Ground should have ranked high in the canon of indie cinema. But the early 1980s was not an easy time for women or independent filmmakers and the film was never theatrically released. With a recent home and theatrical release, it's getting its overdue acclaim.

Losing Ground plays Spacy:

•    February 20th 7:30pm

One of the first feature-length motion pictures directed by a Black American woman and a National Film Registry inductee, Losing Ground tells the story of a Black female philosophy professor and her abstract painter husband (Bill Gunn) drifting apart as they experience separate creative evolutions.

Personal Problems plays Spacy:

•    February 15th 7:30pm

•    February 21st 7:30pm

Ganja & Hess plays Spacy:

•    February 14th 7:30pm

More films and details to come. February Film Series will be at Spacy, 1300 S. Polk Street #160A, Dallas, Texas 75224 inside Tyler Station.

Tiara Unique Francois | learning to be T.U.F.

curated by Ciara Elle Bryant

February 24 - March 29, 2024

Reception: Saturday, February 24, 6 – 8 pm (artist and curator talk at 7pm)

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Utilizing painting and assemblage, Francois’ work explores narratives focused on her identity, family and personal experiences through reimagined memories. Rooted in self-reflection, her self-portraits recall her collection of experiences as a young black woman, navigating personal growth through competing thoughts of hope and self-doubt.

The exhibition title, learning to be T.U.F., directly references her lived experience from childhood to adulthood. T.U.F. is an acronym for Tiara Unique Francois and though it relates to developing that thick skin that life requires, it is also about being wise and knowing oneself.  Curator Ciara Elle Bryant shares, “Tiara Unique Francois doesn’t shy away from exploration. Learning to be T.U.F. is a direct musing of this soul journey. From journal entries to soul portraits Francois has offered the viewer a glimpse into her new practice of learning herself.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Tiara Unique Francois is a visual artist, born and based in Dallas, Texas. She earned her BFA in painting at the University of Texas at Arlington. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions in Texas, Georgia and California. In 2021 she debuted her first solo exhibition, The Pro Compositions at 500X Gallery in Dallas, TX. In 2022, she attended the ON::View Residency in Savannah, GA.

ABOUT THE CURATOR

Ciara Elle Bryant is a multidisciplinary artist and curator working and residing in Dallas, TX. Bryant’s approach to research and curatorial practice has been integral to her process of furthering conversations surrounding black culture in art as well as historical studies.
