WASHINGTON – On July 7, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30), member of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce, led a letter from 15 Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee to the USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy asking for information regarding working conditions that may have contributed to the death of Dallas postal worker Eugene Gates. Mr. Gates, a 40-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service, collapsed on his route last month while temperatures in North Texas reached as high as 115 degrees.
The letter poses a series of questions to Postmaster DeJoy regarding the existing worker protections provided to employees exposed to extreme heat. It is signed by House Oversight Ranking Member Jaime Raskin, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce Kweisi Mfume, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovations Gerald Connolly, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Health Care and Financial Services Katie Porter, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Energy, and Regulatory Affairs Cori Bush, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs Robert Garcia, and eight other members of the House Oversight Committee. The members give DeJoy a deadline of July 21 to respond.
