AUTEUR FILM SERIES RETURNS WITH ‘THE BLACK PRESS’ | Collin College
Collin College’s 2022-23 Auteur Film Series continues with “The Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords,” Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Plano Campus Living Legends Conference Center. The showing and film series is free and open to the public.
“The Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords” provides a history of Black newspapers in America. From the founding of Freedom’s Journal in 1827 through the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s-1960s and into modern times, the documentary highlights the contributions of crusading journalists and publishers who fought oppression while also chronicling the lives of their communities. The film will be presented in conjunction with African American History Month and the Black American Awareness Committee at Collin College.
The Auteur Film Series presents classic, foreign, and independent films with brief educational introductions before the screenings and faculty-led panel discussions afterward. The film series is designed to challenge the viewer’s intellect and encourage conversations that engage students in civil discourse. This year’s film series theme is journalism.
The films will all be shown at 7 p.m. Doors open 30 minutes before each film begins, and seating is limited. Some material may not be suitable for all audiences.
