2021 Dallas Redistricting Commission Submits Recommended Districting Plan to the Mayor

15

On Monday, the 2021 Redistricting Commission submitted its recommended districting plan to Mayor Johnson for presentation to the City Council as required by the City Charter.

“Commissioners repeatedly voiced their commitment to encourage public participation and hearing all public feedback throughout the process,” Jesse Oliver, Redistricting Chairman said. “Throughout the process, the Commission worked diligently to consider and accommodate the requests received from the public.”

On Wednesday, May 18, the City Council will receive a briefing on the Commission’s redistricting process and recommended districting plan.

From the date of submission to the mayor on Monday, May 16, the City Council has 45 days to approve the plan or modify and approve the plan. The 45-day deadline expires on June 29, 2022. If City Council does not adopt the Commission’s plan or a City Council-modified plan before the deadline, the Commission’s plan is deemed approved.

Councilmembers may propose amendments to the plan but must provide a written explanation of the need for the amendments and a copy of the proposed map with the amendment(s) and both must be made available to the public 72 hours before a vote. Written explanations and proposed maps with proposed amendments will be posted to the City’s website.

The districting plan’s new district boundaries will be reflected in the May 6, 2023 election.
