Wichita Falls Police Department announced a suspect was taken into custody after a man was found dead from apparent gunshot wounds in the 2200 block of Yale Avenue in Wichita Falls.

According to NewsChannel6, on December 25, a man was discovered dead from apparent gunshot wounds around midnight in the specified area. The suspect, identified as Heber Jovany Zelaya Reyez, aged 37, was located nearby and apprehended. Authorities said he will face charges of murder and aggravated assault with a combined bond set at $1,500,000. The investigation is ongoing and family notification is pending.

City-Data.com reported that Wichita Falls has experienced an increase in homicides, with nine recorded in one recent period. Violent crime rates have fluctuated, posing risks above certain state averages in specific categories. Local law enforcement continues to address these incidents through investigations and arrests.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) noted that national violent crime estimates decreased by 4.5 percent in 2024 compared to the previous year. Murder and non-negligent manslaughter showed a decline of 14.9 percent. Texas recorded 389 violent crime offenses per 100,000 people in 2024, with murders accounting for 1.3 percent of violent crimes during this period.
