SMU Women’s Tennis freshman Van Impe was named both Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player and Freshman of the Week, according to an April 14 announcement from the league office.
The recognition marks the second occasion this season that Van Impe has earned both honors in a single week. She has now been selected as conference Freshman of the Week four times and received her second Player of the Week award this spring.
Van Impe’s latest accolades come after she secured two ranked singles victories to close out the regular season. On Friday, she defeated No. 13-ranked Berta Passola Folch from California with a score of 6-2, 6-2. She followed up on Sunday by beating No. 32 Monika Ekstrand of Stanford, winning 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in what was SMU’s regular season finale.
In her first semester at SMU, Van Impe holds a record of four wins and two losses against ranked opponents in singles play. She finished the regular season with an overall record of 12-3 and went 7-2 in ACC matches, including six consecutive wins to end conference play.
Van Impe also achieved success in doubles competition over the weekend, going undefeated against pairs from Cal and Stanford. She won her doubles match against Cal’s top pair with a score of 6-3 and secured another win over Stanford’s top duo by taking a tiebreaker set at 7-6 (8-6).
Her recent performances have propelled her to No. 27 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles rankings—the highest ranking she has achieved this season. The No. 25-ranked Mustangs are seeded eighth as they prepare to begin postseason play at the ACC Championships on Thursday, April 16.
