The SMU women’s tennis team was defeated by No. 3-ranked North Carolina with a score of 4-2 at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex on Sunday. Despite the loss, SMU freshman Van Impe recorded a notable win against Reese Brantmeier, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation, finishing the match 6-1, 6-2.
With this result, SMU’s record falls to 7-4 overall and 1-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Mustangs have now played three consecutive matches against opponents ranked in the top 20 nationally.
In doubles action, after an early loss on court three, SMU secured its tenth doubles point of the season. Van Impe and her partner remained unbeaten for the spring with an 8-0 record after winning their match 6-2. Another SMU pair rallied from a deficit to clinch doubles with a 7-5 victory on court two.
Van Impe’s singles win over Brantmeier gave SMU an initial lead of 2-0 in the team contest. However, North Carolina responded by taking four straight singles matches on courts four, six, three and two to secure victory.
The only unfinished match was on court five where an SMU player led Maddy Zampardo of North Carolina 6-3, 5-5 when play stopped.
SMU will next travel for matches against Boston College and Syracuse. Their road trip begins Friday, March 6 at Boston College at 3:30 p.m. CT.
