The University of North Texas at Dallas allocated $231,896 to its women’s basketball teams in 2024, $708,448 below the average spent by institutions across Texas, which totaled $940,344. That’s according to the U.S. Department of Education.
These expenses made up 22.7% of overall sports team spending at the university for 2024.
University data shows total sports expenditures at North Texas at Dallas rose 62.7% compared with 2021.
Basketball continues to be among the most popular college sports in the U.S. along with football, as top NCAA programs attract devoted fans and large TV audiences comparable to those of the NBA. Annual tournaments such as March Madness consistently draw millions of viewers.
College sports has shifted with a federal settlement that now allows schools to share revenue directly with athletes. The deal also directs the NCAA to pay athletes $2.8 billion in back damages over a decade for those who competed from 2016 onward.
By 2022, ongoing legal and legislative developments enabled athletes to profit from their own names, images, and likenesses under new state laws and updated NCAA policy.
The NCAA reported generating about $900 million in March Madness and Division I men’s basketball media rights revenue during the 2024 fiscal year, making basketball the association’s main revenue stream.
