The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced on May 14 that Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged a detainer with Dallas officials following the arrest of two illegal aliens in connection with a gas station shooting that resulted in the death of an unborn child.
Dallas police arrested Keyner Ariel Calero-Jiron, a Nicaraguan national who entered the United States as a minor in 2022, and a 17-year-old illegal alien, following the May 3 incident. The suspects face felony charges, including homicide and aggravated assault with a firearm, after allegedly injuring three people, including a pregnant woman whose unborn child died after an emergency C-section, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
DHS said cocaine was found in the suspects’ vehicle and that the suspects fled from police before being apprehended. ICE lodged the detainer with Dallas officials after the arrests and asked that the individuals remain in custody pending further proceedings, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says it works with local law enforcement agencies and the Department of Homeland Security on criminal illegal noncitizen data and enforcement-related reporting, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was established in 2002 after the September 11 attacks and brought together 22 federal departments and agencies. Its mission includes border security, immigration enforcement, cybersecurity, and disaster response, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
