Born September 11, 1924 – Known for leading Dallas Cowboys
Tom Landry was born on September 11, 1924. He became the first head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 1960. He held the position for 29 seasons. Landry is known for his role in shaping modern football strategy. He developed the 4–3 defense and the “flex defense.” He led the Cowboys to two Super Bowl wins, five NFC titles, and 20 straight winning seasons. His teams played in five Super Bowls between 1970 and 1978. He compiled 270 wins, the fourth-most in NFL history. Landry played and coached in the NFL for 40 years. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990. He lived and worked in Dallas for most of his professional life. His name remains closely linked to the city’s football identity. Landry helped establish the Cowboys as a national team. His work shaped Dallas sports history and professional football.
