A Metroplex public school district began classes on Monday, nearly 48 hours after a gunman opened fire at an adjacent outlet mall and killed eight people and injured seven.
Allen Independent School District (AISD) officials said in a statement that they were left in mourning by Saturday’s incident at Allen Premium Outlets, yet as of press time, remained mum as to whether any students or staff were directly impacted.
“Even if you or your child were not at the outlets, acts of violence can confuse and frighten and may prompt a heightened sense of worry about personal safety,” the statement read. “The counseling department is prepared to meet with any student or staff member who is struggling or feels overwhelmed on Monday, May 8, and will continue to be available through the end of the school year.”
AISD added it’ll deploy counselors to each of its campuses.
“Our children look to us for information and guidance on how to react,” the district said. “Regardless of age, you can help your children feel safe by establishing a sense of normalcy and security and talking with them about their worries.”
According to the release, AISD notified the Allen Police Department (APD) about a threat that had been allegedly scrawled inside of a restroom stall at Lowery Freshman Center.
“My heart continues to break for the victims and everyone who witnessed the senseless tragedy that occurred at the Allen Outlets this weekend,” Superintendent Dr. Robin Bullock said in a tweet. “[The district] remains in close contact with law enforcement, and we appreciate the bravery of all first responders.”
Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) NBC affiliate KXAS reported that Allen Fire Chief Jonathan Boyd said six people died at the mall, while two succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
The suspected shooter perished as well, bringing the death toll as of Sunday to nine, the station reported.
