COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF
After earning a bye and securing the No. 1 seed in the South Central Region, DBU returns to action versus West Texas A&M in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Patriots have been ranked the top team in the nation by the United Soccer Coaches since September 6 and are in the midst of a nine-game winning streak that has earned them home field advantage against the Lady Buffs on Sunday.
Last time out, DBU defeated Midwestern State 4-1 in the Lone Star Conference title game. The Patriots scored three goals in the first half and added one more in the second frame to stop a No. 7-seeded Mustangs squad on a cinderella run through the conference postseason.
PATRIOT STORYLINES
- Although he's in his first year with DBU, last week's conference championship marked the 20th straight for coach Marcus Wood. The longtime leader of Hardin-Simmons won 19 in a row during his time with the Cowgirls.
- DBU's offense enters the NCAA Tournament with a full head of steam. The Patriots have scored at least three goals in four of their last five matches and haven't been held to a single goal since October 15.
- Fifth-year senior Adrianna Schroeder is enjoying the best season of her college career. The veteran goalkeeper is posting career-bests in wins (16), goals allowed average (.65), saves (45), and shutouts (6).
SCOUTING WEST TEXAS A&M
- The Lady Buffs punched their ticket to the second round with a 2-1 win over St. Mary's on Friday. The playmaking ability of Asha James (2 assists) and the scoring prowess of Maria-Frances Serrant (1 goal, 3 SOG) was on full display.
- Head Coach Chad Webb leans heavily on his starters. Nine Lady Buffs have surpassed 1500 minutes played this year. For reference, just three Patriots have reached that total. Emily Avila is WT's minutes leader with 1879 compared to just 1525 for DBU's Adrianna Schroeder.
- Serrant is tied for second in the nation in total shots on goal (55) and averages 2.75 per match. However, the DBU defense was able to keep her contained back in September, holding the all-conference striker to just two shot attempts and one shot on frame.
ALL-TIME SERIES
DBU leads West Texas 11-1-1 in the all-time series and is a perfect 8-0 at Patriot Field.
