DBU Outlasts Dustdevils, 54-53 in Gritty Road Win

Dallas Baptist University Athletic Department issued the following announcement on Feb. 17

THE RUNDOWN

The DBU Men's Basketball team survived the Dustdevils 54-53 Thursday night on the road. The Patriots (17-8, 10-3 LSC) took the last lead of the game with a free throw by Cameron Kahn with 1:39 to play. A crucial rebound with 40 seconds remaining helped the Patriots drain the clock down to 15 and force a buzzer-beating heave from TAMIU's (12-11, 4-8 LSC) Greg Bowie II that bounced off the iron. The one-point win is DBU's second in a row and eighth away from the Burg Center.

It was a muddy, gritty game for a different-looking DBU squad. Austin Garner (14 points, four 3-pointers) and Isaac Bullard (10 points) stepped into the starting lineup and helped propel the Patriots to the win. Garner had another big first half, splashing three triples for a game-high 11 points to give DBU a 29-23 lead over a TAMIU team that entered the break just 1-of-15 from 3-point range. But the Dustdevils, led by Greg Bowie II (game-high 19 points, 3 steals), would mount a 12-0 run and recapture the lead midway through the second half.

Strong defense from Ricky Lujan (11 points) and physical play by Cameron Kahn (14 points, game-high 6 assists) helped DBU top a TAMIU squad that won the board battle 39-24. Kahn threw himself all over the hardwood in the final minutes, drawing a crucial charge down 47-45 and forcing his way through three Dustdevils for an and-1 to keep the Patriots within striking distance. A pair of big free throws from Bullard tied the game at 51 before a layup by Kahn and a critical free throw gave DBU the last point it would need in the nail-biting win.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

-DBU has won 10 straight versus TAMIU.

- Isaac Bullard went a perfect 4-4 from the foul line and tied his season-high with 26 minutes played.

COACH BLAKE FLICKNER ON A GRITTY WIN

"What a gritty, tough road win against a very well-coached team. We handled some adversity today and found a way. We fell behind in the second half, but didn't give up. Our guys kept believing and settled in to get some stops and timely buckets. TAMIU is special defensively, and they gave us a huge challenge tonight."

"Cam was in foul trouble most of the game but found a way to get 14 points, six assists, and a big time charge. Isaac, Breezy [Javion Richard], and Grayson stepped up big tonight, and I thought Jules [Julian Miranda] provided some great leadership down the stretch. Then with the game on the line, Ricky made the game winning play on defense."
