Fresh Frisco Reedy graduate and former Lions outfielder Jordan Viars was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 84th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft.
For the 6-foot-4 Viars, getting the call from the NL East Ball Club is the second part of a hat trick that also includes his May graduation and his upcoming birthday.
“Congratulations to Reedy High School's Jordan Viars on getting selected in the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft. Viars, who graduated from Reedy in May and will turn 18 later this month, was the 2021 District 9-5A Offensive Most Valuable Player,” the Frisco ISD athletic department announced on Facebook on July 14.
Philadelphia had purportedly made many other franchises green with envy by nabbing the 17-year-old.
MLB.com reported that while Viars wasn’t one of its top 250 prospects, he was “well-known within the industry.”
Born on July 18, 2003, Viars earned himself North Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star honors by crafting a line of .464 with eight home runs, 26 RBIs and a 1.626 OPS in 34 games.
He had committed to play for Arkansas earlier in the year, Field Level reported.
