Uber has acquired an additional two years to deliver on the promises it made to the city, including to establish a new corporate core in Deep Ellum.
According to The Dallas Morning News, the Dallas City Council unanimously authorized the extension on May 13. Council member David Blewett said the extension is essentially accepting the reality of the coronavirus crisis.
“All we’re doing here is accepting the reality of COVID,” Blewett told The Dallas Morning News. “Uber is still coming. We’re not writing a check upfront.”
In August, the City Council approved $9.3 million in economic incentives that included $746,000 from a five-year tax break. Additionally, the Council approved $8.6 million in economic development grants.
The five-year tax discount will reportedly begin in January 2026 rather than the previously planned 2024. The council gave Uber until Dec. 31, 2025 to fulfill its property investments.
Uber officials say the company plans to occupy the majority of the 500,000-square-foot office tower that is being constructed. Moreover, Uber says it will employ at least 2,500 full-time employees and plans to pay the new employees an annual salary of at least $100,000.
