The SMU women’s tennis team lost 4-2 to No. 23 California on April 10 as they began their final weekend of regular season play.
This match was important for both teams as it affected their standings in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). With this result, SMU’s record moved to 14-6 overall and 6-5 in ACC play, while Cal improved to an 11-6 overall record and an 8-4 mark in conference matches.
Cal took the doubles point after winning on courts two and three, handing SMU only its fourth doubles loss of the season. The Mustangs’ top pair, ranked No. 21 nationally, earned a win on court one with a score of 6-3 against Cal’s Mao Mushika and Anya Murthy, improving their spring record against ACC opponents to nine wins and two losses.
In singles action, SMU initially took the lead with victories on courts one and five. The Mustangs’ player ranked No. 59 secured her third ranked win this year by defeating Cal’s Berta Passola Folch (ranked No.13) in straight sets, while freshman Comiskey rallied for a three-set victory—her sixth consecutive singles win—tying her for most dual-match wins on the team this season.
However, Cal responded with wins on courts four and two before clinching the match when Sophie Hernandez won a close contest at court six (6-4, 5-7, 7-5). One singles match remained unfinished; McGinley held a narrow lead when play stopped.
Looking ahead, SMU will face No.47 Stanford at home on Sunday at noon Central Time to conclude its regular season schedule.
