The SMU women’s tennis team lost 4-2 to No. 6 Oklahoma on May 3 in the second round of the NCAA Championships held in Norman, Oklahoma.

This match concluded SMU’s dual season with a record of 16-8 under their first-year head coach. The Mustangs had a strong showing in doubles, with their No. 31-ranked pair defeating the top-ranked duo from Oklahoma, Roisin Gilheany and Gloriana Nahum, by a score of 6-4 on court one. This win ended the Sooner pair’s seven-match winning streak and improved Van Impe and McGinley’s record to 17-2 for the season.

A freshman duo clinched another doubles victory for SMU, marking their ninth win together this year and helping SMU improve to a season doubles point record of 20-4. However, Oklahoma responded by winning three singles courts—court six in straight sets, court three in three sets, and court four also in straight sets—to take a commanding lead.

SMU’s No. 88 player kept hopes alive with a straight-set victory over No. 37 Edda Mamedova (7-6(2), 6-3), marking her second ranked opponent defeated this spring and fifth overall during her time at SMU. Despite this effort, Oklahoma secured advancement to Super Regional play by winning on court five after three sets.

The final score was #26 SMU: 2; #6 Oklahoma: 4.
