SMU women’s golf advanced to the fourth day of the NCAA Championship, tying for 13th place at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif., according to a May 24 announcement from the university.
The advancement keeps SMU in contention as one of 15 teams moving forward after three rounds. The Mustangs entered the third round tied for sixth place and needed to remain within the top 15 to continue. They finished round three nine over par, following even par and one-over scores in their first two rounds. This placed them three shots ahead of the cutoff for advancing teams.
After Monday’s fourth round, only eight teams will move on to match play quarterfinals. Individual performances were highlighted by a freshman leading SMU with an even-par third day and sharing 28th overall. Another team member was just one shot back for the tournament after shooting a three-over-par 75 in round three, holding a share of 36th place with her best score being a second-round 70. Chen finished four over par through three rounds and is tied for 60th after also posting a third-round score of 75.
Jin matched her teammates’ scores with another round-three total of 75, starting strong with a front-nine score of 34 and now shares the position at 83rd overall. Another Mustang carded a third-round score of 77 and is tied for 105th place.
The Mustangs are set to compete again on Monday along with the other qualifying teams as they vie for one of eight spots available in Tuesday’s match play quarterfinals.
