SMU men’s golf team held third place at the Desimone Invitational on March 9, following strong performances in the first two rounds of play.
The tournament, taking place in Daly City, California, saw SMU shoot a combined 12-under par in the opening round and eight-under in the second round. The Mustangs trail only TCU and Arizona State, sitting nine strokes behind the leader. Notably, SMU is ahead of eight ranked teams, including No. 4 Texas and No. 10 Pepperdine.
A freshman from Switzerland led the way for SMU with rounds of 67 and 65, recording just one bogey over 36 holes. He also eagled the 538-yard 14th hole late in his day and currently holds second place individually at 12-under par—just one stroke off the lead and three strokes ahead of third place.
Other notable performances included a player who carded rounds of 70 and 71 to finish two-under par, highlighted by an eagle on the ninth hole. He is tied for 28th place. Another Mustang sits one shot back in a tie for 33rd after posting rounds of 72 and 70 with only four bogeys on the day. A teammate opened with a strong round of 67 before shooting a second-round score of 76 to finish at one-under par in a tie for 39th. The final Mustang competitor stands at three-over par after rounds of 73 and 74.
The Mustangs are scheduled to tee off again on Tuesday at noon Central Time (10:10 am Pacific Time), paired with golfers from TCU and Arizona State as they look to improve their standing.
