SMU men’s golf will finish its regular season at The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford University at the Stanford Golf Course from March 26 to 28. The event features a strong field of 27 teams, including 22 ranked in the top 100 and 14 among the top 50.
The tournament is significant as it serves as SMU’s final test before postseason play. Competing against highly ranked teams such as BYU, Georgia Tech, UCLA, and Washington provides valuable experience for the Mustangs.
Recently, a Mustang golfer secured his third career individual title with a shared victory at the Pauma Valley Invitational. He shot two-under or better in each round, helping SMU place eighth out of fifteen teams. Last year at The Goodwin, SMU finished fifth out of thirty teams with one player achieving a top-10 finish after shooting two-under for the tournament.
Historically, SMU has participated in every edition of The Goodwin from 2015 through spring of 2023. In addition to recent team success, individual players have excelled: one Mustang repeated as Stephens Cup champion in consecutive years—becoming the first since at least 1980 to do so—and leads this year’s squad with a scoring average of 70.70.
Two Mustangs are currently ranked among the top twenty-seven in PGA Tour University standings—one holding fourteenth position after starting fifteenth this season and another ranking twenty-sixth. Only five other programs have multiple players within these rankings.
Looking ahead, several Mustangs also qualified for major amateur events last summer; four alumni have won U.S. Amateur titles over three decades. As they wrap up their regular season campaign at The Goodwin and prepare for conference championships and NCAA regionals, SMU aims to build on its recent achievements.
