SMU men’s golf will participate in the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial tournament hosted by Virginia in Charlottesville on April 13-14. This event is the team’s final competition before the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship.
The tournament field consists of 12 teams, including four ranked among the top 25 nationally, with Virginia holding the No. 2 spot. Other participating teams are Charlotte, Florida State, Liberty, Loyola Maryland, Maryland, NC State, Tennessee, Texas State, Toledo, and Virginia Tech.
In their most recent outing at The Goodwin tournament, SMU finished sixth out of thirty teams. Will Sides led the Mustangs with a tie for third place at seven under par.
Sides has tied Noah Goodwin’s school record for season scoring average at 70.00 and recently won his third individual title at the Pauma Valley Invitational. This achievement places him tied for third all-time in career titles at SMU alongside several former players including Bryson DeChambeau and Hank Kuehne.
Two SMU golfers are currently ranked within the top 30 of PGA Tour University standings; one is positioned at No. 11 after starting the season ranked fifteenth while another holds No. 30. Only a handful of programs have multiple athletes inside this ranking bracket for consecutive years.
Last season saw SMU secure two team titles and three individual honors across various tournaments such as Trinity Forest Invitational and Stephens Cup. The Mustangs also advanced to match play during their first ACC Championship appearance and qualified for NCAA regional competition.
Looking ahead from summer performances into this spring event in Charlottesville, SMU aims to continue its momentum as it prepares for postseason play.
