SMU men’s golf is tied for fourth place out of 30 teams after the opening round of the Goodwin, according to a March 26 announcement.
The tournament features a strong field, with nearly half of the participating teams ranked in the top 50. SMU finished day one at five under par, trailing host Stanford by six shots. The Mustangs are currently level with California and Brigham Young University in fourth place, while Stanford leads at eleven under par.
Three SMU golfers recorded rounds in the 60s. One Mustang shot a three-under-par 67, highlighted by birdies on his final three holes. This performance marked his thirteenth round in the 60s this season and lowered his scoring average to 70.17. Another team member posted a two-under-par 68—his eighth round of par or better this season—and moved into a tie for eighteenth place after birdieing two of his last three holes. A third Mustang carded a one-under-par 69, placing him in twenty-seventh position following an impressive front nine score of thirty-three.
Other SMU golfers finished with scores of seventy-one and seventy-four, tying them for fifty-seventh and one hundred second places respectively.
The Mustangs will continue play on Friday during the middle round of the tournament. They are set to compete alongside players from Little Rock and Cincinnati as well as independent participants, with tee times beginning at nine o’clock Central Time.
