SMU men’s golf held second place after two rounds of the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial in Charlottesville, Virginia, on April 13. The team finished the day at 18-under par for the tournament, trailing only host and second-ranked Virginia.
The Mustangs opened with a five-under round in the morning and improved to a 13-under score in round two. Their combined total of 18-under marks the eleventh lowest score over 36 holes by an SMU squad. After starting fifth at midday, they moved up to second position behind Virginia.
Two SMU golfers shot four-under-par rounds of 67 in the first round and followed with five-under-par scores of 66 in round two. Both are tied for second individually, one stroke behind Paul Chang of Virginia. Steinmann was two under through ten holes before finishing strong with six birdies; Sides played bogey-free throughout all 36 holes and now holds a single-season scoring average record for SMU at 69.75, surpassing Noah Goodwin’s previous mark.
Other Mustang performances included an even-par day from one player who shot rounds of 72 and 70 to share twenty-sixth place after climbing eleven spots during round two. Another teammate moved up twenty-one positions into thirty-third with a second-round score of sixty-nine following an opening seventy-four. A third golfer sits tied for fortieth after posting scores of seventy-two and seventy-one.
Competing as an individual, freshman posted rounds of seventy-seven and seventy-two to finish sixtieth on the day.
The final round is scheduled for Tuesday at Birdwood Golf Course at Boar’s Head as SMU wraps up its regular season.
