SMU announced on May 17 that its women’s track and field team made history at the 2026 Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. Senior athlete Sanders became the first SMU female athlete to win an ACC championship title after her victory in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.04 seconds.
This milestone marks a significant achievement for the program, highlighting progress in competitive performance at the conference level. The team’s overall performance more than doubled its previous points total from last season’s championships, finishing with 30 points and placing thirteenth overall.
The day began with SMU’s relay team running a season-best time of 44.88 seconds in the 4×100-meter relay, which was also the third-fastest time in program history. After a weather delay, Sanders secured her historic win. “I’m still so excited with the result,” Sanders said. “I can’t believe that happened, but it was definitely earned. I thank God for carrying me safely through the race and for everyone who has supported me to get to this moment.”
Chacchia followed by earning third place in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best of 56.75 seconds, lowering her own school record. “It was such an amazing day,” Chacchia said. “I’m so proud of myself for executing my race, running a PB and making it onto the podium in such a competitive conference.” In field events, Hedda Kvalvag achieved fourth place in triple jump with a personal best of 13.03 meters and received All-ACC Second Team honors.
Head Coach A’Havahla Haynes commented on her team’s determination: “This team stopped worrying about projections and started competing with belief, toughness, and purpose,” Haynes said. “We created opportunities this season. Our seniors led with confidence and determination and put up serious points for the team.”
Looking ahead, SMU will continue its season at the NCAA West First Round meet scheduled from May 27 to May 30 in Fayetteville.
