The Oak Cliff Cultural Center announced on May 7 that it will present a new solo exhibition, “Tracing the Traces,” by artist Chenxi Gao. The exhibition will run from May 9 to June 6 and is free and open to the public. An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center located at 223 W. Jefferson Blvd., Dallas.
The exhibition features works in paper, thread, fabric, and video projection that explore objects, homes, spaces, people, and their connections. According to the announcement, Gao’s work traces monologues and conversations as well as what is remembered or forgotten—examining whether dwellings are meant to be temporary and considering what happens to traces left behind in places once inhabited.
The pieces on display were created between 2023 and 2026 in Denton (Texas), Fayetteville (Arkansas), and Roanoke (Virginia). Gao is described as a multidisciplinary artist with a background in printmaking who was born and raised in China. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Baylor University and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas.
Gao explores her sense of identity through changes in cultural and social environments stemming from her experiences living in various places since childhood. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally; it also forms part of permanent collections such as that of the Bradbury Art Museum. She currently serves as an assistant professor of printmaking at Hollins University in Roanoke.
The Oak Cliff Cultural Center operates under Dallas’s Office of Arts & Culture at its West Jefferson Boulevard location near the historic Texas Theater. Media interviews are available upon request.
