SMU Women’s Tennis secured a close 4-3 victory over Notre Dame on March 22, with McGinley coming from behind to win a three-set match and clinch the win for the Mustangs in South Bend. The team improved its record to 12-5 overall and 6-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
The result marks SMU’s seventh road win of the season and their fifth against ACC opponents. Earlier in the weekend, SMU defeated Louisville 4-0. Against Notre Dame, the Mustangs lost the doubles point after defeats on courts one and two. The court three doubles match was left unfinished at a score of 6-6.
In singles play, No. 63 Van Impe gave SMU an early boost with a straight sets victory on court one. After Notre Dame regained a narrow lead with a win on court five, SMU responded with another singles victory by defeating Rylie Hanford. In the only ranked singles matchup of the day, No. 77 Bianca Molnar of Notre Dame defeated No. 61 from SMU.
A crucial win on court six kept SMU’s hopes alive before McGinley’s decisive performance on court three. After dropping the first set, McGinley won the next two sets to secure her tenth victory of the season and tie Llewellyn for most wins on the team this spring.
The Mustangs will conclude their three-match road trip at San Diego State on Thursday, March 26.
