Rep. Marc Veasey marked Women’s Equality Day on August 26, 2025, by highlighting the anniversary of the 19th Amendment and reflecting on its historical significance in a series of posts on his social media account.
In his first post, Veasey stated, “(1/4) It is Women’s Equality Day- 105 years ago today, the United States formally adopted the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote.” (August 26, 2025).
He continued by acknowledging the efforts behind this milestone: “(2/4) For decades, a broad coalition of women of every background fought relentlessly to secure this fundamental right. Yet, even after its passage, women of color continued to be denied access to the ballot in many states until the 1960s.” (August 26, 2025).
In another post from the same thread, Veasey addressed current challenges: “(4/4) With today’s growing threats to fair voting, it is more important than ever that we protect and strengthen rights like those enshrined in the 19th Amendment.” (August 26, 2025).
The commemoration comes as Rep. Marc Veasey continues his tenure representing Texas’s congressional district. He has consistently secured re-election since first winning office in 2012. In recent elections, he defeated Patrick David Gillespie in both 2022 and 2024 with substantial margins—winning nearly 69% of votes in the most recent contest. Over previous cycles from 2014 through 2020, Veasey also prevailed over challengers including Jason Reeves, Willie Billups, M. Mark Mitchell, and Fabian Cordova Vasquez.
Women’s Equality Day commemorates August 26 each year—the date when the United States ratified the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. While this amendment granted women suffrage nationwide, many women of color faced ongoing barriers to voting until further civil rights advancements were made during the mid-20th century.
