Crystal Furton, an ENT Specialist at Dallas Breathe-Free Sinus and Allergy Centers, addressed a common misconception regarding chronic sinus symptoms on Instagram. She said that many individuals mistakenly attribute these symptoms solely to allergies, unaware of potentially treatable underlying conditions.

“People just always assume it’s an allergy problem,” said Furton, according to Instagram. “They never think that there’s maybe a chronic underlying reason why their sinuses are giving them problems. They just are like, it’s just allergies and I’ve just dealt with it my whole life. They don’t realize that it shouldn’t be that bad and that there are things that we can do to help them.”

According to a 2016 review in Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research, while allergies and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) can coexist, CRS is an independent inflammatory condition with distinct immunological drivers and treatment requirements. Misidentifying CRS as an allergy can delay effective management options such as surgery or targeted anti-inflammatory therapies.

Data indicate that up to 30% of CRS cases are misdiagnosed as allergic rhinitis, which delays appropriate care and contributes to increased long-term health costs and impaired quality of life. A 2015 study by the National Library of Medicine found that patients with untreated or misdiagnosed CRS incurred significantly higher healthcare usage and indirect costs compared to those who received correct diagnoses and treatments. Early endoscopic diagnosis and intervention may significantly alleviate this burden.

Imaging studies like sinus CT scans often reveal structural abnormalities such as nasal polyps or mucosal thickening in patients presumed to have allergies but who actually suffer from chronic sinus disease. A 2021 review in Rhinology emphasizes the importance of these anatomical insights in distinguishing chronic sinusitis from allergic rhinitis, especially in patients with persistent symptoms despite antihistamine use. This highlights the value of multidisciplinary assessment for persistent nasal complaints.
