The City of Dallas announced on May 8 that mosquito samples in the city have tested positive for West Nile virus. Weather permitting, officials plan to spray the affected area for mosquito control between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. each night from Saturday, May 9 through Sunday, May 10.
The spraying will take place in an area generally bounded by Dorothy Nell Drive to the north, Cedar Bluff Lane to the west, Coltview Place to the east, and CF Hawn Freeway to the south. This is near block 13800 Garden Grove Drive (75253) in City Council District 8.
The city said that while the Environmental Protection Agency has approved the insecticide used for treatment, residents should avoid contact with the spray by staying indoors during spraying hours. People inside vehicles are advised to keep windows closed and air conditioning on until trucks pass and no spray is visible. Residents who come into contact with the spray are encouraged to wash thoroughly with soap and water.
Officials also urge residents of Dallas to protect themselves from mosquito bites by reducing outdoor activity during evening and nighttime hours. Those who must be outside should cover their arms and legs and use mosquito repellent.
To help prevent mosquitoes from breeding, residents are asked to eliminate standing water around their homes as mosquitoes can develop from eggs into adults in as little as seven days. Free mosquito tablets are available at district Code Compliance Services offices while supplies last. Residents can report standing water or mosquito problems by calling 3-1-1 or visit www.dallascitynews.net/fightthebite for more information.
