The Dallas Stars announced on Mar. 31 that general manager Jim Nill has signed an extension with the team. Under Nill’s leadership, the Stars have reached significant milestones, including nine Stanley Cup Playoff appearances and a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020.
Nill’s tenure is notable for consistent playoff success and recognition at the league level. The club has accumulated a record of 549-345-125 since he became general manager before the 2013-14 season. The Stars’ postseason achievements include four Western Conference Final appearances (2020, 2023, 2024, and 2025) and ranking second in postseason wins across the National Hockey League during his time.
“I’m fortunate to work with incredibly talented and passionate individuals that have helped our franchise become one of the best in the NHL,” Nill said. “I’m extremely grateful to have the opportunity to continue as general manager of the Stars. My family and I would like to thank Tom Gaglardi for his continued support as we look to bring the Stanley Cup back to Dallas.”
Last season, Nill won his third consecutive Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award (2022-23 through 2024-25), becoming the first person in league history to achieve this distinction three times. During these seasons, Dallas led all NHL teams with 327 regular-season points and ranked fourth in total wins at 149.
Before joining Dallas, Nill held front office roles with both Detroit Red Wings—starting in summer of 1994—and Ottawa Senators after a nine-year playing career as a right wing for several teams including Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks. Internationally, he has worked with Hockey Canada multiple times, most recently serving as assistant general manager for both the upcoming Winter Olympics in 2026 and last year’s Four Nations Face-Off tournament.
With this extension, observers expect continuity within management as Dallas continues its pursuit of another Stanley Cup appearance.
