Mosquito samples in Dallas have tested positive for the West Nile Virus, prompting city officials to schedule mosquito control spraying between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. from Thursday, June 4 to Friday, June 5, weather permitting.
The targeted areas include locations within Council Districts 9 and 4. The first area is bounded by Blessing Drive on the north, Springside Lane on the west, Dalgreen Drive on the east, and Southridge Drive on the south near 6700 Sperry Street (75214). The second area is bounded by East Overton Road on the north, Sun Valley Drive on the west, Kostner Avenue on the east, and Five Mile Parkway on the south near 4200 Maryland Avenue (75216).
City officials said that while the Environmental Protection Agency approves the insecticide used for treatment, residents should avoid contact with spray by staying indoors during scheduled times. People inside vehicles are advised to keep windows up and air conditioning running until spray trucks pass through and no spray is visible. Those who come into contact with spray are advised to wash affected areas thoroughly with soap and water. Officials noted that “the spray breaks down quickly in sunlight and has no residual effect.”
Residents are urged to reduce outdoor activity during evening hours when mosquitoes are most active and use mosquito repellent if outside. To prevent breeding of mosquitoes that spread West Nile Virus, residents should eliminate standing water from places such as swimming pools not kept clean, stagnant ponds, pet watering dishes, birdbaths, potted plants, old tires or containers left outdoors.
Free mosquito dunks will be available at Code Compliance Services District Offices while supplies last. Residents can report standing water or mosquito problems by calling 3-1-1 or request addition to a Do Not Spray list through this service.
