Mosquito samples in Dallas have tested positive for the West Nile Virus, prompting city officials to schedule mosquito control spraying from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night between Tuesday, June 2 and Wednesday, June 3, weather permitting, according to a June 1 announcement.

The targeted area for spraying is within the boundaries of Calculus Drive on the north, Bencrest Place on the west, Midway Road on the east, and Alta Vista Lane on the south in Council District 13. The address provided for reference is 4000 Allencrest Lane (75244).

The City of Dallas advises residents in these areas to avoid contact with the spray by staying indoors during scheduled operations. People inside vehicles while trucks are actively spraying should keep their windows up and air conditioning on until trucks pass through and no spray is visible. Those who come into contact with the spray are advised to wash affected areas thoroughly with soap and water. The insecticide used is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency and breaks down quickly in sunlight without leaving a residual effect.

Residents are urged to reduce outdoor activity during evening and nighttime hours when mosquitoes are most active. Those outside should cover arms and legs and use mosquito repellent as additional protection against bites.

To prevent mosquito breeding, residents should eliminate standing water around their homes. Common breeding sites include unmaintained swimming pools, stagnant ponds, pet watering dishes, birdbaths, potted plants, old tires, empty containers, toys left outdoors, and clogged rain gutters or French drains. Mosquitoes can develop from egg to adult in as little as seven days. Free mosquito dunks are available at Code Compliance Services District Offices while supplies last.

Residents can report standing water or mosquito problems by calling 3-1-1 or request addition to the City of Dallas Do Not Spray list through this service line. More information about mosquito control efforts can be found at www.dallascitynews.net/fightthebite.
