The City of Dallas announced on May 22 that mosquito samples in the city have tested positive for West Nile virus, prompting scheduled spraying in specific neighborhoods. The treatment is set to take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. from Tuesday, May 26 to Wednesday, May 27, weather permitting.

The affected area is generally bounded by Morgan Meadow Lane to the north, Pleasant Valley Drive to the west, White Elm Road to the east, and Forest Lane to the south within District 10 at block 9900 Silvertree Drive (75243). City officials said that while the Environmental Protection Agency has approved the insecticide for use against mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus, residents should avoid contact with the spray by staying indoors during application times.

Those inside vehicles while trucks are actively spraying are advised to keep windows closed and air conditioning running until trucks pass and spray is no longer visible. Residents who come into contact with the spray should wash affected skin thoroughly with soap and water. The city stated that “the spray breaks down quickly in sunlight and leaves no residual effect.” People outdoors during scheduled spraying times should remain alert for trucks and not follow them.

Residents are encouraged to reduce outdoor activity during evening hours when mosquitoes are most active. Those who must be outside should cover their arms and legs and use mosquito repellent. To prevent breeding of mosquitoes that can spread West Nile virus, citizens are asked to eliminate standing water from places such as neglected pools, ponds, pet dishes, birdbaths, potted plants, old tires, empty containers, toys, clogged gutters or French drains.

Free mosquito control tablets will be available at district Code Compliance Services offices while supplies last. For concerns about standing water or mosquitoes or requests regarding spraying exclusions (No Spray List), residents can call Dallas’ 3-1-1 service line or visit www.dallascitynews.net/fightthebite for more information.
