The Dallas Public Library announced on May 26 the launch of its annual SMART Summer program, which will begin May 30 and run through August 8. The initiative aims to promote reading and learning among children and families across Dallas by offering free events, activities, and reading challenges at all library locations.
Participants who register for the program can take part in a variety of free science, math, art, and reading programs throughout the summer. Activities include interactive science sessions, animal presentations, magic shows, and other hands-on educational opportunities. Attendees of all ages are encouraged to track their reading and learning activities for a chance to win prizes such as books, board games, or even a Nintendo Switch.
“SMART Summer helps families make learning an adventure,” said Manya Shorr, director of the Dallas Public Library. “Whether they are reading or exploring, children build confidence and discover new interests in a safe and welcoming environment.”
Families are invited to attend one of several kickoff parties on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at Lochwood, Fretz Park, Martin Luther King Jr., North Oak Cliff, and Pleasant Grove libraries. These events will feature games, crafts, giveaways, and free books.
“The Friends of the Dallas Public Library association is proud to support this City initiative to promote reading and learning,” said Denise McGovern, executive director of Friends of the Dallas Public Library. “We know that Dallas residents love their libraries. SMART Summer is a shining example of how libraries serve and support all of Dallas through engagement, access and community.” The 2026 SMART Summer program is made possible with support from Friends of the Dallas Public Library as well as sponsors including Atmos Energy (Visionary Sponsor), Pizza Hut, Whataburger & KFC; book prize sponsor Annette Corman; winner sponsors SMU English Department along with Lauren & Will Waldrop; innovation sponsors HEB/Central Market; SMU; Donna Wilhelm; among others.
