The City of Dallas announced on April 9 that it will officially recognize April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, with a proclamation ceremony scheduled for Monday, April 13 at 11:00 a.m. in the Flag Room at Dallas City Hall. The event is organized in partnership with the Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center and will bring together city leaders, advocates, and community members to raise awareness and support survivors of sexual violence.
Sexual assault remains a widespread issue affecting people across all demographic groups. In Texas, two out of five women and one out of five men experience sexual assault. Estimates indicate that in Dallas alone, approximately 260,872 women and 129,474 men have been affected by sexual assault. Despite its prevalence, many incidents go unreported due to stigma, lack of understanding, and barriers to accessing support.
The proclamation highlights the City’s commitment to fostering a culture of respect, safety, and equality. It also underscores the importance of collaboration among community organizations, businesses, and residents to prevent sexual violence and ensure survivors have access to comprehensive trauma-informed resources such as medical care, advocacy services, counseling, and legal assistance.
April is observed nationally as Sexual Assault Awareness Month—a time dedicated to educating communities about prevention strategies and amplifying survivor voices. The City encourages all residents and visitors to participate in events throughout the month aimed at promoting awareness, education, and advocacy on these issues.
During the ceremony on April 13th in Dallas City Hall’s Flag Room, officials will formally proclaim April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Dallas while calling on the community to unite for safety, respect, and accountability.
