Basketball remains one of the most popular college sports in the United States, rivaled only by football, with major NCAA programs attracting significant fan support and television audiences comparable to those of the NBA. Tournaments including March Madness draw millions of viewers every year.

The landscape of college athletics shifted after a federal settlement enabled schools to directly distribute revenue to players for the first time. The settlement requires the NCAA to pay $2.8 billion in back damages to athletes competing from 2016 to the present over a decade.

In 2022, after sustained legal and legislative efforts, college athletes secured the ability to profit from their names, images and likenesses with the adoption of new state laws and a change in NCAA policy.

The NCAA reported approximately $900 million in revenue during fiscal year 2024 from March Madness and related Division I men’s basketball tournament media rights, reinforcing basketball as the NCAA’s most significant revenue stream.
