Councilmember Maxie Johnson shared updates on April 8 regarding ongoing efforts to improve Dallas City Council District 4, focusing on public safety, neighborhood development, and resident engagement.
Johnson said the district remains committed to building the community together with residents. He emphasized that his team works closely with city departments and service partners to address concerns ranging from neighborhood conditions to public safety and resource access. “We believe that every resident deserves a seat at the table. Your input continues to shape the decisions we make and the priorities we set for our district,” Johnson said.
The newsletter highlighted Dawn Blair as a community leader whose service in both her professional role at the Department of Aviation and her civic activities has positively impacted Oak Cliff. Blair’s involvement includes running for public office and supporting local empowerment through Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Johnson also described new initiatives such as the “Block-By-Block” campaign, which involves weekly meetings with residents and businesses to identify issues directly. This approach was recently demonstrated through collaboration with local Muslim leaders at Oak Cliff Empowerment Center and joint efforts with Code Liaison Officer Prater addressing specific problem areas behind AutoZone at Sunnyvale and Bonnie View. “‘Boots on the Ground’ is about being present, responsive, and committed to building safer, stronger neighborhoods Block-By-Block,” Johnson said.
In response to encampments near Ledbetter and I-35, Johnson reported coordinated actions involving multiple city departments including Emergency Management Crisis Response Team (EMCR), City Prosecutor’s Office, and Dallas Police Department’s Homeless Outreach Team (HOT). These teams aim to combine enforcement with outreach services for unhoused individuals while upholding public safety standards.
The first District 4 Public Safety Committee meeting was held recently as part of an effort led by Mike Brown. The committee brings together Homeowners Association leaders across District 4 in a collaborative approach focused on reducing crime block-by-block. Residents now have access to a Crime Analytics Dashboard providing real-time data about neighborhood safety trends.
A recent community meeting at Cedar Crest Golf Course addressed future plans for Cadillac Heights park development. Concerns were raised about ground contamination previously reported by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as well as flood plain risks associated with proposed amenities like football fields and tracks. City Parks staff responded during the meeting promising further follow-up information.
Looking ahead, Johnson invited residents to attend an upcoming District 4 Community Meeting scheduled for April 16 regarding plans for a Fresh Market initiative aimed at improving food access, economic growth, and revitalization.
