SMU junior Berube earned Second-Team All-America honors in the 200 backstroke after setting a new program record with a time of 1:38.96 at the NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 28.
The achievement highlights Berube’s strong season, as he broke the SMU record for the event twice this year. His performance placed him 14th overall in the nation and secured his place on the All-America Second Team. Earlier in the competition, Berube also set an SMU record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 45.73.
Other notable performances from SMU included freshman participation on platform diving, where an Indiana native scored 315.50 to finish 27th overall. The relay team posted a time of 2:49.40 in the 400 freestyle relay and finished in 21st place.
This year’s NCAA Championships saw six Mustangs athletes receive All-America honors across several events including first overall on one-meter diving, second overall on three-meter diving (both first-team), and second-team recognition for participants in both individual and relay swimming events.
SMU swimmers set four new school records during NCAAs: Berube’s marks in both the 100 and 200 backstroke, another swimmer’s record-setting swim of 1:31.94 in the 200 freestyle, and a score of 495.30 on three-meter diving.
The Mustangs finished with a total of forty-four points at this year’s championships, placing them twenty-third overall—a twelve-place improvement over last year.
